When someone experiences dizziness, also called vertigo, the whole world seems to spin out of control with the nearest solid object becoming a lifesaver.  See how our top Athens chiropractor at Horn Family Chiropractic can help.

WHAT IS VERTIGO?

Vertigo is the feeling of being off-balance and dizzy, as if you or your surroundings are moving, spinning, or swaying. The intensity of the symptoms can vary greatly, from being barely noticeable to so severe they find it hard to keep their balance doing everyday tasks.

A lot of people misunderstand what vertigo is. Vertigo is actually a symptom rather than a condition itself. This means your dizziness is your body’s way of telling you something isn’t right.

Causes of Vertigo

Vertigo is a common complaint, especially after head and neck trauma. It is an indicator of a problem in an area of your body that plays a role in how your body orients itself and maintains balance. Vertigo may be a symptom of:

  • Damage to the inner ear
  • Damage to spinal joints or ligaments
  • Misalignment or a partial dislocation of the vertebrae in the neck
  • Disturbances in pathways in the nervous system

SYMPTOMS OF VERTIGO

Vertigo can range from a small nuisance to an indication of a severe underlying condition. Contrary to popular belief, dizziness is not the only symptom associated with this disorder. Some of the symptoms of vertigo that commonly accompany dizziness are:

  • Blurry vision or difficulty focusing / Double Vision
  • Nausea / Vomiting
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Problems hearing, especially in one ear
  • Trouble maintaining balance

OUR APPROACH TO VERTIGO IN ATHENS PA

  • At Horn Family Chiropractic in Athens, we start with a thorough evaluation which includes a detailed history and full physical exam to determine the exact cause of vertigo.
  • We examine your spine for misalignments.
  • X-rays will be taken to evaluate the physical structure of your spine.
  • Our assessment will determine the exact treatment necessary.

HOW WE TREAT VERTIGO DEPENDS ON YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS:

  • SPECIFIC CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your spinal nerves. In the upper neck, faulty motion patterns create misinformation about body position and movement going from the joints to the brain.
  • CERVICAL DECOMPRESSION to reduce long-standing pressure on the nerves of the head and neck.
  • EPLEY MANEUVER--a type of maneuver that helps to clear the debris that is settling in the vestibulocochlear apparatus. The inner ear houses the body's true balance center, the vestibulocochlear system. This complex system of fluid-filled tubes lined with hair-like sensors provides information to the central nervous system about position and movement.  Debris can accumulate in sensitive areas within the tubes and result in vertigo.
