WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?

Scoliosis is a sideways bend or curvature of the spine.  A true diagnosis of scoliosis is made when the spine curves more than 10 degrees to one side.

TYPES OF SCOLIOSIS

  • Idiopathic: Which means the cause is unknown or that there is no single factor that contributes to the development of the disease
  • Congenital: Typically result from a spinal defect present at birth, and is usually detected at an earlier age than idiopathic forms of scoliosis
  • Neuromuscular: Spinal curvature that develops as a result of some kind of neurological or muscular disease, such as muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy. This form of scoliosis tends to progress much more quickly than others.

CAUSES OF SCOLIOSIS

  • The most common type of scoliosis has no known cause, although it is thought to include hereditary factors
  • Neuromuscular conditions, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
  • Birth defects affecting the development of bones of the spine
  • Injuries or infections to the spine

RISK FACTORS

  • Age: Signs and symptoms tend to appear during the growth spurt that occurs just prior to puberty.
  • Sex: Although males and females develop mild scoliosis at nearly the same rate, females have a much higher risk of the curve worsening and requiring treatment.
  • Family History: Hereditary factors have shown a correlation of scoliosis running in families.

COMPLICATIONS OF SCOLIOSIS:

Although most people who have a mild scoliosis have no complications, more severe forms of scoliosis can include the following complications:

  • Appearance: As scoliosis curves worsen, it may cause uneven hips and shoulders, rib humps, lower back humps, and protruding shoulder blades
  • Back Problems: Adults who were diagnosed with scoliosis as a child are more likely to have chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain than others
  • Lung and Heart Damage: In severe cases, the rib cage can press against the heart and lungs, making it more difficult to breathe and for the heart to pump
