Disc Injury in Athens?

disc injury can be helped by a chiropractor

WHAT ARE DISCS?

The little pads that lie between your vertebrae are called the intervertebral discs. Each of these discs has a tough outer ring and a soft gel-like center. Your disc's job is to both join and to separate your vertebrae from one another. These discs act as cushions, or shock absorbers, so that the bones don’t make contact with each other as you move around, carry large objects, and bend over.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF DISC INJURIES:

  • A disc protrusion (BULGE) occurs when the nucleus of the disc bulges but does not rupture
  • A disc extrusion (HERNIATION) is when the fibrous outer shell of the disc ruptures and the inner gel-like material has squeezed through
  • A disc sequestration is when the gel-like disc material expands extensively into the area outside the vertebrae and is separated from the main part of the disc

CAUSES OF DISC INJURIES:

  • Gradual, age-related wear and tear
  • Improper lifting
  • Lifting objects that are too heavy
  • Twisting/Turning while bending
  • Trauma (falls, car accidents, sports injuries)

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DISC INJURIES:

Disc Injuries can result in considerable back pain, numbness, tingling, and limitation in range of motion due to the irritation of the nerve roots at the point where the injury occurs and the impact this has on the surrounding tissues. A number of symptoms can arise from this nerve irritation and damage, including but not limited to:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Weakness in the arms, legs, hands, or feet
  • Leg and foot pain, numbness and tingling (also known as sciatica)
  • Arm and hand pain, numbness and tingling
