Don’t Let Holiday Travel in Athens PA Be a Pain in the Neck (Literally!)

The holidays are almost here, which means many of you are gearing up for road trips to visit family, flights across the country, or maybe even a cozy train ride to see loved ones. While we love that you're spending time with those who matter most, we also know that holiday travel can do a real number on your body. Our Athens PA chiropractor can help.

Long hours in cramped airplane seats, marathon drives, heavy luggage, and sleeping in unfamiliar beds – sound familiar? We see the aftermath in our office every year, and we don't want you to spend your precious holiday time dealing with back pain, stiff necks, or sore shoulders!

Here are our top tips to keep your spine happy while you're on the move:

Before You Go

Pack Smart, Not Heavy
We get it – you want options! But that overstuffed suitcase isn't doing your back any favors. Try rolling your clothes instead of folding (saves space AND reduces wrinkles), and if you must check a heavy bag, use proper lifting technique: bend at your knees, keep the bag close to your body, and engage your core. Better yet? Use a suitcase with wheels and let them do the work!

Schedule a Pre-Trip Adjustment in Athens PA

Starting your journey with your body in proper alignment can make all the difference. Think of it like getting an oil change before a long drive – a little preventive care goes a long way. Give us a call to squeeze in an appointment before you head out!

On the Road

The 30-Minute Rule
Whether you're driving or riding, make it a point to move every 30 minutes. Pull over for a quick stretch, roll your shoulders, do some neck rotations, or just walk around the rest stop for a few minutes. Your body wasn't designed to stay in one position for hours on end!

Lumbar Support Is Your Friend
That curved support pillow isn't just for comfort – it's essential! If your car seat doesn't have good lumbar support, roll up a towel or sweatshirt and place it behind your lower back. Your spine will thank you.

Driver's Posture Check
If you're behind the wheel, position your seat so your knees are slightly bent and at the same level (or higher) than your hips. Your arms should have a slight bend at the elbows when holding the wheel at 9 and 3. And please, no "one-arm cool guy" driving for hours – keep both hands on the wheel and your shoulders relaxed!

In the Air

Aisle Seat = Win
Whenever possible, snag that aisle seat. It gives you more freedom to get up and move around without bothering your neighbors, and you can stretch your legs a bit more easily.

Stay Hydrated
Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, and dehydration can make your muscles more prone to cramping and stiffness. Drink plenty of water before and during your flight (yes, even if it means extra bathroom trips).

Airplane Stretches
While seated, try these simple moves:

  • Ankle circles (both directions)
  • Shoulder rolls (forward and back)
  • Neck stretches (gently tilt your head side to side)
  • Seated spinal twists (hold the armrest and gently rotate)

At Your Destination 🏠

The Guest Bed Dilemma
We know – Aunt Linda's guest bed isn't exactly a five-star hotel mattress. If the bed is too soft, ask for an extra blanket to place under your sheet for added firmness. Too firm? An extra pillow under your knees (if you sleep on your back) or between your knees (if you're a side sleeper) can help.

Don't Skip Your Morning Routine
Even on vacation, try to maintain some normalcy. A few gentle stretches in the morning can help you start the day feeling good rather than hobbling to the coffee pot.
